Terms & Conditions (“Terms”)
Last updated: 3 June 2020
Please read these Terms carefully before downloading and taking the IELTS Indicator test (“IELTS Indicator”) from the British Council, IELTS Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 84 008 664 766) and Cambridge Assessment English, collectively the “IELTS Owners”. Your access to and use of IELTS Indicator is conditional on your acceptance of and compliance with these Terms. By accessing or taking IELTS Indicator you agree to be bound by these Terms.
IELTS Indicator is jointly owned by the IELTS Owners. IELTS Indicator is an online test of the four English language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) which is designed to provide you with an indication of how you will perform in an IELTS test. Organisations which use IELTS test results (“User Organisations”, such as universities, employers and immigration bodies) may accept IELTS Indicator results as evidence of your English language proficiency, but they may require that you confirm this later by taking the IELTS test.
Your IELTS Indicator result will consist of a band score for each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an overall band score. Your result will be made available to you within seven days of you taking the test.
IELTS Indicator is made available to you online, outside a test location, and is not taken under supervised test conditions. The Listening, Reading and Writing components are remote proctored and video/audio recorded for test integrity and fraud prevention reasons. Your IELTS Indicator results are indicative of the results you are capable of achieving in the IELTS test but do not guarantee that you will get the same results in the IELTS test. IELTS Indicator is not itself a form of testing recognised by all User Organisations as a measure of English language proficiency. Please contact your User Organisation to find out if they accept an IELTS Indicator result for the purposes of conditional applications.
You must take your IELTS Indicator yourself and must not permit others to have access to IELTS Indicator or test items. You must only take IELTS Indicator in a country where it is offered, and you must not misrepresent the country where you reside to take the IELTS Indicator test. IELTS Indicator is for personal, non-commercial use only.
What you’ll need for your test
You must ensure that your computer meets the minimum and recommended system requirements (and those of Zoom) and that it has a video-enabled camera, speakers and microphone for the IELTS Indicator test before you register.
Please refer to our Refunds Policy at www.ieltsindicator.com/refund-policy for further information.
You can take IELTS Indicator if you are 16 or over, but it is not recommended if you are under 18. The test content of both IELTS Indicator and the IELTS test are designed for adult English language learners.
If you are 16 or 17 years of age, (i) a parent or guardian must complete a consent form (https://www.ieltsindicator.com/child-consent-form/) at least 48 hours before you take the IELTS Indicator test; (ii) you must have a chaperone aged 18 or over attend the Speaking component, which is compulsory if you want to obtain a result; and (iii) your IELTS Indicator test will be remote proctored including video/audio recording during the Listening, Reading and Writing components. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to ensure the chaperone for the Speaking test is aged 18 or over. The chaperone must adhere to the policies outlined in the child consent form signed by the test taker’s parent/legal guardian.
Please refer to our policies on Vulnerable Adults (https://www.ieltsindicator.com/vulnerable-adults-policy/) and Child Protection (https://www.ieltsindicator.com/child-protection-policy/) for further information.
IELTS Indicator is and remains the intellectual property of the IELTS Owners and IELTS Indicator and the results are made available to you only for the purpose of you taking IELTS Indicator. You must not use, copy, reproduce or distribute IELTS Indicator or any element of it or the results other than for the purposes of taking IELTS Indicator and to provide indicative scores to user organisations.
All material you produce in taking the IELTS Indicator test becomes the property of the IELTS Owners and you are not entitled to have access to it.
The IELTS Indicator Speaking component is conducted on a web-based video application (Zoom) requiring you to enable your computer’s video camera and microphone. An examiner will be present to ensure the integrity and security of the IELTS Indicator Speaking test.
You must arrive on time for the Speaking test, or risk obtaining no result for your IELTS Indicator test, with no option to reschedule the Speaking test.
If you are aged 16 or 17, you will need to have a chaperone, clearly visible to the examiner, but who must not take part in the test in any way. Your chaperone will have to provide a photo identity document at the beginning of the Speaking test so that we can verify their identity, age and relationship to you against those details provided in the child consent form. For test takers of this age, headphones or earbuds cannot be worn to complete the Speaking test, as the chaperone must be able to hear all communication throughout the test.
You will need to ensure that you are in a quiet place inside with a plain background (no superimposed Zoom backgrounds) for the Speaking component. You must always demonstrate morally acceptable behaviour suitable for a test situation during the Speaking test; if you do not, the Speaking component will be terminated immediately by the examiner. The Speaking test may be terminated early with good cause at the examiner’s discretion and such decision shall be final.
If the examiner cannot verify your identity (and/or that of the chaperone where you are aged 16 or 17) at the start of the Speaking test, the Speaking test will be terminated and rescheduled. No refund will be provided. If the examiner is still unable to verify identity on the rescheduled Speaking test date, your whole IELTS Indicator test will be cancelled and your test fee will be refunded.
Proctoring of the Listening, Reading and Writing Tests
The Listening, Reading and Writing components of IELTS Indicator are remote proctored for test integrity and fraud prevention reasons. Remote proctoring involves collecting information including facial data, an image of your ID document and anything that is captured by your computer’s camera, microphone or is shown on your computer screen during the test. You must:
- show us who you are in an identity check: At the beginning of the Listening, Reading and Writing test we will capture, via your camera, a visual image of your face. We will also ask you to hold up your identity document (which you used to register for IELTS Indicator) to the camera for a visual image to be captured. This will be used to ensure that the person in front of the camera is the person that is registered to take the test.
- agree that during the Listening, Reading and Writing components remote proctoring will capture audio and video from your computer’s camera and microphone along with a recording of the screen of the computer used for the test.
- ensure that you are alone, in a quiet place inside with a plain background
- demonstrate morally acceptable behaviour suitable for a test situation during the test; any failure to do so may result in you not receiving a result and your test fee not being refunded.
Remote Proctoring collects video and audio recordings and biometric data solely for the purposes of:
- identity verification
- conducting the test
- security and integrity of the test and testing process
- incident resolution, such as fraud prevention
We may at any time review recordings if we have any concerns about the integrity of the test session or if concerns are raised by a User Organisation.
If you are suspected of engaging in any form of malpractice, or do anything that might damage the integrity and security of the IELTS Indicator test, you may not receive a result and your test fee will not be refunded. You may also be banned from taking IELTS Indicator or the IELTS test in the future. If banned, you will receive a notification stating the length of the ban. If you are subject to an IELTS test ban you may not take the IELTS Indicator test. If you book for a test, your booking will be cancelled and your test fee refunded. If you are identified after taking the test, a test result will not be issued and your test fee will not be refunded. Results issued when you are subject to a ban will be cancelled and you will not be entitled to a refund.
Details of any proven or suspected malpractice may be provided to User Organisations.
Below are some, but not all, forms of malpractice that may result in a test taker not receiving a result or refund.
- using notes or materials of any kind from any source
- copying the work of another person
- using a phone or other electronic device
- interacting with another person in the room
